Everton’s First Black Players Celebrated In Stadium Exhibition
Everton’s first 11 black male players are being celebrated with a display at Hill Dickinson Stadium throughout Black History Month. The Club has worked alongside Show Racism The Red Card as part of a pilot programme, which the organisation aims to roll out across all clubs to highlight the major contribution to the game by black players. Invited guests gathered in Trinity Place Bar at the waterfront stadium this week where Everton’s XI, researched with the help of Everton's Heritage Society, was unveiled on banners that will be visible to visitors in the public space throughout October. Everton Giant Peter Reid joined Club officials, representatives from Show Racism The Red Card, the Premier League and Unison General Secretary Andrea Egan, to honour the trailblazers who made their mark with the Toffees. Ben Osu, Head of Equity and Inclusion at Everton, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to launch our Black History Month exhibition, celebrating the first black men's players to represent the Club, in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card. “Players of Black heritage have made an enormous contribution to the history, success and culture of our Club, both on and off the pitch, and it is fitting that we take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate those achievements during October. “This exhibition shines a light on the pioneering individuals who helped pave the way for future generations, often overcoming significant barriers in the process. “By sharing their stories, we not only honour their legacy but also inspire current and future players, supporters and colleagues to continue championing equality, inclusion and opportunity for all.” The careers of Mike Trebilcock, Cliff Marshall, Daniel Amokachi, Earl Barrett, Terry Phelan, Danny Cadamarteri, John O’Kane, Olivier Dacourt, Ibrahim Bakayoko, Kevin Campbell and Abel Xavier all feature in the exhibition, which will also be the backdrop for an educational visit by schools connected to Everton in the Community next month. Show Racism The Red Card’s Paul Kearns explained: “This is a really important project for us. "It encapsulates the history of the Club and tells really important stories and lived histories of the players who set the foundations and were pioneers for the players that came after them. “We started these exhibitions as a pilot project and it's proven to work, so we aim to get this across the whole city to make sure as many people as possible can learn about these histories and now important these players' stories are.” Iffy Onoura, Head of Race Equality and Inclusion at the Premier League – and a boyhood Everton supporter – was another delighted to attend the launch of the exhibition. He added: “Fair play to the Club and Show Racism The Red Card for putting this on because it's important to the whole of the city. “Everton has always been the People's Club, but something like this just shows the inclusion and everything that it stands for. “It’s important to keep fighting the fight because there is no room for racism. “Unfortunately, we're in an era now where we're seeing some of those elements creep back into society and dissenting voices are coming from dark places. “It’s always a vocal minority and somehow we've got to find a way to embolden that decent majority, so events like this just speak to that.” Black History Month, which runs throughout October each year, brings communities, schools, organisations and institutions across the country together to honour the contributions of Black people to Britain’s past, present and future. This year’s theme, “Honouring Our Communities,” invites us to recognise the individuals whose everyday contributions shape, support and sustain Black life across the United Kingdom. Nsangou On Target In Everton's Behind-Closed-Doors Clash
Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry and 16-year-old Jonathan Nsangou were on the scoresheet as Everton played out a 3-3 draw with Blackburn Rovers behind closed doors at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday afternoon. Alcaraz's confidently-dispatched penalty opened the scoring inside eight minutes, before Mark Travers saved a Blackburn spot-kick midway through the opening period. Alcaraz then turned provider on the stroke of half-time, producing an inviting cross for Barry to turn home from close range to double the Toffees' advantage. The visitors hit back with two quick goals after the restart and went ahead with three minutes remaining, via a third penalty of the match. Boss David Moyes handed minutes to a host of youngsters throughout the contest, including Joshua van Schoor, John Dodds, Ezra Carrington, Harvey Foster and Melvin Matos – and it was Under-18s forward Nsangou, who calmly struck home a late equaliser after being played in by Jack Grealish.

Top Athletes To Run Everton 10K In Memory Of Lifelong Blue
A host of professional athletes and Olympians are putting football rivalries to aside to run the Everton 10k in memory of their friend and colleague who was tragically killed last year. Triathlon coach Sam O'Shea, 27, was a lifelong fan of the Toffees alongside dad Paul, from Kirkby. Sam died after being struck by a motorbike while cycling in France in September 2025. A foundation has been since set up in Sam’s name, raising almost £40,000 to date. And while the family are still waiting for justice as French authorities continue their investigations into the incident, Sam's family and friends have come together for a fitting tribute at Hill Dickinson Stadium this Sunday 4 October. Angela, who describes Sam as a “dream son”, said: “Sam was born a Blue and absolutely loved Everton" “When the stadium was first built, we bought Sam and Holly an engraved stone on Everton Way. “It just seems perfect to do the Everton 10k with all of his friends in blue t-shirts and go and see the stone at the end of it.” Paul initially saw an advert for the 10k and suggested his wife Angela should do it. However, Sam's family and friends were all keen to join in, with between 40 and 50 people set to run in his memory. This includes Sam's girlfriend Lucy Byram, one of his best friends James Scott-Farrington, and Jack Willis and Jess Fulliger, who are all professional triathletes. Olympian Gordon Benson, who represented Team GB in the 2016 games in Rio supporting the Brownlee brothers, will also take part. It comes after Sam's friends put aside football rivalries for his funeral last year, with Liverpool fans and good friend Olympian Alex Yee – a Crystal Palace fan – wearing Everton shirts in his memory. Two of his athlete friends also ran the Manchester Marathon earlier this year in full Everton kits with O'Shea on the back. Angela said: “It's mind-blowing what people have done for Sam... the blue and red rivalry is there, but it's so special what people have done for him. “And while there are lots of athletes running for Sam on Sunday we really appreciate our amazing friends and family members who have stepped out of their comfort zone to do their first-ever 10k.” Sam was born in Gibraltar, where his parents, who are in the military, and sister Holly lived at the time. He went on to represent the country as a triathlete and cyclist at the Island Games and cycling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. His family have also set up The Sam O'Shea Foundation in Sam's memory. Paul said: “What we want to try to do is help people who are less fortunate than Sam, whether that's financially or with material things like cycling helmet, cycling shoes, swimming goggles etc. A lot of people can't afford these things because it's an expensive sport.” Paul also said the charity may also be able to provide coaching opportunities to help people progress their careers. Q&A: Garner & Hackney On How Everton Have Improved, Grealish & Unbeaten Start
James, you've had a slightly delayed start to the season with your injury. What's the latest on that? James Garner: I'm getting back to full fitness. It's been a bit of a struggle, but I've had a few games now, and I feel like each game I'm getting better. You’re back in the team now. What's the start of the season been like? You’re unbeaten so far. JG: Exactly, yeah, it's been a positive one. We took a good point away on the weekend and maybe could have won it, as well. So, to be unbeaten so far has been good and, you know, we're looking to – of course – it'd be a miracle if we stayed unbeaten for the rest of the season, but we want to keep winning. Hayden, you were Championship Player of the Season last year. How have you found the transition to the Premier League? Hayden Hackney: Yeah, good. What I expected, really. But so far, I’ve really enjoyed it. What's the main difference? HH: Probably the physicality, I would think. I'll probably say that's the main difference. Tell us about the friendship between the pair. You play very similar positions, very similar roles on the pitch but you've known each other for a while? JG: Yeah, well we've known of each other. We're a year apart so in the England set up, so we were always a year apart but since he's come into the group, he's been class. He's class around the lads and his quality on the pitch is even better. He's a bit of a dope! But yeah, we get on really well. A bit of a dog? He likes to get his foot in? JG: No, a dope! Yeah, a dope. He's in the room, then he's not in the room. And Hayden, what are James’ main qualities? HH: From watching him last year, I think he had an unbelievable year. To be fair, his off-the-ball work has really impressed in training. Obviously, I knew he's a good player, but off the ball as well, he's been very good. And for you, personally, what's the manager said that you need to improve to become established as a Premier League footballer? HH: I think it's just the timing. Obviously, I've come on, started the first game and then come on a few times. I think it's just getting used to the quickness of this league. But yeah, I'm confident I can adapt to it. A lot's been made of the fact it's a small squad. Has that made it like a band of brothers, a backs-to-the-wall effort? JG: Exactly that, yeah. I think you can look at it in whatever way you want, really, but for us as players and staff, we've looked at it in terms of we're all in this together and we've got a lot of quality. So, there's no reason why we can't just keep on pushing and have a good season. Jack Grealish is back in the house. What's he been like about the place? JG: He's just the same old. He's just Jack. Loud, funny, bubbly, but then at the same time on the pitch, he brings a lot of quality. We're pleased to have him back. And for you now, you're one of the more experienced heads, if you like, even at the age of 25. Do you feel you're taking on a bit of a leadership role? JG: Yeah, I think it comes a little bit more natural to me anyway. The first few years were tough for me. I had two serious injuries and I was a young lad coming into such a senior group with Seamus and Tarky and all these type of lads. But now a couple of the senior lads have now moved on, and I feel like it's only natural now for me to step up and lead. For you personally Hayden, what would success look like this season? HH: Playing as many games as possible, earning the manager's trust and yeah, adding to the team with my qualities that I've shown last year. You mentioned that some experienced heads have moved on, but there must be a young vibe about the place? With people like Tyrique George coming through, Harrison Armstrong, players like that. JG: Exactly that, yeah. I think we've probably looked a little bit different than we were last season, as well, in terms of we look faster, dynamic – that youthful energy.
