Black Stars Technical Advisor Winfried Schäfer Sacked as GFA Shakes Up Backroom Staff The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has made a significant decision to part ways with Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schäfer. This move is part of a broader restructuring of the senior national team's backroom staff, according to reports from Joy Sports. Background and Recent Developments Winfried Schäfer joined the Black Stars in late 2024 to support Otto Addo and his technical team. This decision came after Ghana's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. However, Schäfer's tenure was unexpectedly cut short following the recent dismissal of Otto Addo, as the GFA aims to overhaul the team’s support staff. Joy Sports reports that with Otto Addo's departure last month, Schäfer's position was also terminated. The GFA seems to be providing the new head coach with the opportunity to assemble his own team, indicating that further changes within the backroom staff are likely. Potential Candidates for Head Coach Several prominent coaches have emerged as potential candidates to replace Otto Addo. The list includes: Slaven Bilic: Former manager of West Ham United. Carlos Quieroz: Previously the head coach of Egypt. Fernando Santos: Former head coach of the Portuguese national team. While the GFA has yet to make a formal announcement, Sports Minister Kofi Adams revealed in a recent interview that the appointment of a new Black Stars coach is expected to be announced next week. Challenges Ahead The incoming coach will face the challenging task of preparing the team for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, with just 60 days to assemble and train the squad. Ghana has been drawn into a competitive group that includes Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by matches against England and Croatia. As the nation awaits the official announcement of the new coach, the focus remains on how these changes will impact the team's performance on the world stage. Reports suggest that the new Black Stars coach will be arriving with some backroom staff of his own. The Ghana Football Association, led by Mr. Kurt Okraku, is doing everything possible to bring in an experienced coach to guide the team to success.
