Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White was a late call-up to the England squad for the Nations League matches. Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White will be hoping he has staked a claim for future England call-ups after contributing to a “special” camp.

Drafted in for Cole Palmer

The Reds playmaker had originally been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the four Nations League fixtures. He was drafted in when Cole Palmer withdrew, abandoning a family holiday in Dubai to link up with the Three Lions.

Gibbs-White made lively substitute appearances in each of England’s matches as they beat Czech Republic home and away, thumped Croatia 7-0 and showed promise in a defeat to world champions Spain. In an encouraging sign for the 26-year-old, Tuchel has said the “train is rolling” without Palmer after the national team impressed in the Chelsea man’s absence.

“The train is rolling”

Asked whether Palmer and other players not involved had fallen down the pecking order, Tuchel replied: “It’s always like this. This is how it has to be.

“Everyone should be eager to come, desperate to come, because the train is rolling and full credit to the players who bought into that. It can only work like this.

“We can only put our full energy into the camp and the players who are in camp make the camp special. This will never change.”

Palmer and Foden

While Palmer chose to withdraw due to reported load management, Manchester City’s Phil Foden was another absentee as he was left out of the squad by Tuchel. The German admits he is unsure whether the pair can fit into England’s full-throttle, fluid style of attacking football.

“I won’t talk about it today. With all the respect I have for Phil and for Cole, tonight is not the evening to talk about it.”

Gibbs-White’s initial omission from the squad came after he had also missed the cut for this summer’s World Cup. Tuchel’s decision to leave him out prompted raised eyebrows on both occasions given Forest’s No.10 has been in superb form this calendar year.

“My country comes first”

Speaking about cutting short his trip to Dubai, Gibbs-White said during the international camp: “I think I spent more time on the plane than I did actually in Dubai. But my country, playing for my country, comes first - 100 percent.

“As soon as I got the call there was no question in my mind, no debate in my mind, whether to come. Like I said, it's an honour to represent your country, whether it's 10 minutes, sitting on the bench, it's an honour to represent your country.”

Back to Forest

Gibbs-White will now switch his focus back to the Reds and Sunday’s trip to Crystal Palace (2pm kick-off). He will want to use the next few games to impress in the Garibaldi to get the nod from Tuchel for next month’s camp.
