Renée Slegers has shared her post-match reaction following our 4-2 defeat away to Manchester City in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
The head coach saw us twice take the lead before suffering City equalisers, and the home side would go on to put the result beyond doubt.
“I think first half, an even game with momentum shifts,” she reflected. “We controlled parts, we're dangerous, they are threatening as well. Really happy with the goal, of course, we're taking the lead.
“And then second half, again we start well, we get a really good goal, Less scores a good goal. We're up again, which is not easy, City away. But then everything changes, I think, with the 2-2, they score, and the energy that they get with the changes that they make, and they get immediate effect.
“After that it's hard for us to control things and really threaten the way we want, but it's still open until we go and push for it, and then we concede, so the scoreline then becomes bigger than what it should be.”
Naturally that was one of Renée’s main frustrations from the game - that we were able to take the lead twice, only to fail to protect them.
“In all aspects of the game, in those vital moments against these top teams, vital moments and vital phases in the game, our own box and when we defend and what we let them do and not let them do, that's of course something we really need to do better,” she said.
After a difficult run of results, Renée spoke about what the focus will be across the international break.
“I think really important, it’s been a long time together,” she said. “It's been really intense. It's not been results that we've wanted. No one wanted this, the club, the fans. They were brilliant today again.
“But it's really good for the players to go away and go to another environment, go to the national teams, play their football somewhere else and then come back with new energy.”
