Renée Slegers has given her initial post-match reaction to Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

“Disappointed with the loss of course,” she said. “I think in the first half, up until their goal, we do a lot of good things. We put pressure on, spend time in their half, we’re aggressive and we’re convinced in our actions.

“We are in and around the final third and we create, but unfortunately we don’t score, and that’s where you have momentum in these games. It will swing, and you have to capitalise.

“Chelsea scores, and then in the second half, we don’t get as much pressure on as we do in the first half, so they can settle a little bit more on the ball. And then I think the goal could’ve come, it was quite open at times, but we didn’t get the goal, so yeah, gutted with the loss of three points, of course.”

Asked how we dealt with a different style of opposition in an end-to-end encounter, our head coach continued: “In the first half we did well with the aggression towards the way they wanted to play.

“The players were good, determined in their actions, but at the end of the day, it didn’t give us the three points today. So, for today, I’m angry and I’m not happy, and the squad is the same because we want so much more for the club.”

While there are parts of the performance to be encouraged by, we asked Renée how we can get back to our best in terms of results.

“Keeping things away from the players - just continuing to train and work hard,” she said. “Work on the details, but also keep the players free so they can perform at their best.”
