Read our head coach's thoughts ahead of the Barclays Women's Super League game at home to Manchester United

Before every home game, Renée Slegers gives her thoughts around the team and our upcoming game in her manager's notes published in the matchday programme.

Ahead of our Women's Super League match at home to Manchester United, the head coach says the players will be ruthless following last Sunday's goalless draw against Crystal Palace.

Hello and welcome to Emirates Stadium for what has become a key fixture in the Barclays Women’s Super League – Manchester United. And we like it even more when it is here, under the lights at our home. All of us, players and staff alike, can’t wait to get back out on the grass and show what we can do.

There was a lot of disappointment and frustration on Sunday that we’ve had to work through this week. No matter how well we played – and there were a lot of positives to take from the performance against Crystal Palace – the result is what counts at the end of the season.

We brought a lot of variety in our attack, both from set pieces and open play, but the finishing touches were missing. That wasn’t through lack of effort or intensity. There have been times in the past where panic has set in when the goals just don’t come, and I don’t believe that was the case last weekend. We didn’t stop believing we would score. From a mentality perspective, that is exactly what we need to hold on to. But we must concentrate more on the finer details to improve.

Even if you go into a game expecting to dominate possession, the reality of breaking down an opposition’s low block is never easy, especially when you face a team as well-drilled as Crystal Palace. After the full time whistle, we had to ask ourselves: were we aligned at every opportunity? Was each pass, shot and movement at the standard we expect from ourselves?

As we found last weekend and last season, draws were what held us back from achieving what we are fully capable of. There is so much that we’re already good at and so much I can already see we’re improving at, so we can’t dwell for too long on last weekend. We just have to persevere and learn.

The response I’ve seen from the girls this week is exactly what we wanted. Clinical in the final third, motivated and energetic in all of our training sessions so far. We’ve reviewed every aspect of the Palace game together and then they’ve worked so hard on the pitch. For me, there is no better opportunity to put all of these learnings into practice than against Manchester United, a side we failed to score against last season. Of course, they have a new manager this season and they’re setting up differently to how they did before, so that is a separate challenge for us to tackle. But naturally it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to. We have talked about building momentum early on in the season, and tonight is an opportunity to make sure that the result matches our performance and that we continue to build momentum as we head into a busy and important block of games.

We were all sorry that we couldn’t secure a win for all of the supporters who showed up to make such an incredible atmosphere last Sunday, and we’re even hungrier to put in a performance your support deserves tonight. Thank you for the energy you brought from start to finish last weekend. We hope you can bring the same today, because your energy and beliefs drives us forward.

Let’s make it a special evening – COYG!
