The young defender agreed pro terms on his 17th-birthday

Angelinou Pedro celebrated his 17th-birthday by signing his first professional contract.

The young central defender has been with us since he was just 11-years-old, and marks a significant step in his journey by turning pro.

"It's the best [birthday]," Angelinou said shortly after signing his contract, "it's a massive moment for me and my family.

"It's taken a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get to this point, but I'm just proud because it makes the contract a more special feeling, it's another milestone.

"I joined when I was 11. It's been a journey full of hard work, learning and sacrifice, so coming through the Academy and now signing professionally here, it's a massive honour."

Our Academy has produced a number of top talents in recent years, with the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman moving into the first team since Angelinou joined us.

The defender feels that the environment at our Academy, which he himself has benefited from, is the reason for our continued production of homegrown players.

"You're surrounded by top players and top coaches, who force you to improve and keep working.

"I'd say all of them [inspire me]. Once you see Academy players playing at the Emirates, you naturally think that one day it could be you."

As well as our Academy graduates, our first team features some formidable central defenders.

Angelinou appreciates the value in having such fantastic role models to look up to.

"I admire both Saliba and Gabriel. Gabriel for his aggression, leadership and mentality, while Saliba is composed. I try to take things from both players."

Looking ahead to the season, Angelinou reflected on his achievement, as well as his hunger to progress and develop.

"It's been a good journey [so far]. I just wanted to have a really strong season, keep on progressing and being consistent, in training or matches, just to make a good impression of myself."

Everyone at Arsenal congratulates Angelinou on signing his contract and looks forward to seeing him in action this season.
