All the news from our 3-1 defeat at the Sobha Realty Training Centre

Our under-18s suffered a first defeat of the season as we lost 3-1 to Ipswich Town in the Premier League South.

A hat-trick from striker Chris Atherton proved to be the difference as the Tractor Boys picked up their first three points of the season. Emerson Nwaneri netted our first goal of the season in stoppage time.

FIRST HALF

We made three changes from last weekend's opener against West Brom, with Theo Odaji-Ukueku, Jayden Oba and Hakeem Abubakar all coming in from the start.

It was the visitors who had the first opportunity of the match on seven minutes as Jayden Adetiba's dangerous cross through the box forced Jack Talbot to smother the ball as Chris Atherton closed in for the opening.

We grew into the game and created a string of good chances as we searched for our first goal of the campaign.

First, Emerson Nwaneri's curling effort was tipped over by goalkeeper Edward Twyman before Abubakar's powerful shot from distance was pushed away once more by Twyman.

But 10 minutes later the visitors had their opener. Having come close early on, Atherton evaded the tackle of Daniel McCarron down the left wing before cutting inside and firing under Talbot.

We looked to get back into the match and almost found it on 35 minutes as Nwaneri glided into the box after winning the ball back before seeing his effort tipped over the bar.

But four minutes later the Tractor Boys doubled their lead and it was Atherton once again. Adetiba continued to cause problems, cutting his cross back to Atherton, who curled the ball into the top corner.

SECOND HALF

In a bid to get back in the game, we made a triple change at half-time, as Joshua Sesay, Maalik Hashi and Bowen Phillips all entered the contest.

But the visitors got themselves further ahead as Atherton completed his hat-trick.

The number 11 linked up once more with Adetiba, who drove down the wing before picking out the striker inside the six-yard box to tap into an empty net.

Sub Phillips thought he had found us a way back into the game on 61 minutes as his effort at the backpost seemed destined for the net but for a block by Ipswich captain Indiana Pedder.

Bowen was in the thick of the action, picking out fellow sub Hashi on 67 minutes, but his header went wide of the post.

With time ticking down we had another effort go just wide, this time Hashi picking out Elyon Mbala who couldn't direct his header on target. Nwaneri then had his latest attempt, forcing another save from Twyman.

Nwaneri wouldn't be denied a goal as the youngster was able to find the net in stoppage time. Good work from Josh Tahou to find Nwaneri in space inside the box and the attacker was able to place his shot into the bottom corner.

It proved to be he last action of the match as we suffered our first defeat of the season.

The 3-1 loss means that we're still on the hunt for our first win for the 2026/27 campaign.
